Understanding Frizz: The Science Behind It

Understanding Frizz: The Science Behind It

Frizz is one of the most common concerns our hair care experts see and also one of the most misunderstood.

Most people think frizz means their hair is “dry” or “puffy,” but the real cause sits at a microscopic level within the hair fibre.

Your hair is protected by a cuticle a shingle-like outer layer made of tiny overlapping scales. When this cuticle lies flat, hair appears smooth, shiny and controlled. When it lifts, moisture from the air enters the hair shaft, causing it to swell unevenly. That swelling is what we see as frizz. Humidity is the biggest trigger. Moisture in the air penetrates the fibre and disrupts the uniform structure of the strand. However, dryness also contributes hair that lacks internal hydration has a roughened cuticle and actively pulls moisture from the environment. This is why hair can frizz even on a dry day.

Damage worsens the problem. Heat styling, colouring, lightening or bleaching, and even rough towel drying chip away at the cuticle, leaving the hair permanently porous. Curly and coarse hair types are naturally more prone because their shape makes it harder for natural oils to coat the strand evenly.

Kérastase Gloss Absolu addresses frizz differently from traditional smoothing products. Instead of coating the hair heavily, it uses 3-Step Hydra-Glazing Technology:

• Plumps the fibre with hydration

• Smooths the cuticle for light reflection

• Creates a humidity barrier

Powered by hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid and wild rose oil, the routine delivers up to 100 hours anti-frizz, long-lasting hydration and glossy hair for days.

The result isn’t flat hair it’s controlled, soft, naturally moving hair. Because true frizz control doesn’t come from weight. It comes from restoring the structure of the hair itself.
